Through the windows of the bridge the prisoners saw the daylight for the last time. The name ‘Bridge of Sighs’ refers to the sigh they would make while crossing the bridge. Next to the basilica there is the Doges' Palace, this palace dates from the 9th century and did not only serve as home of the doge, but as a court and city hall as well.
