Venice, Italy

Venice is built on 120 islands, some of them have been created artificially. To connect all these islands, there are as many as 400 bridges. If you were thinking about seeing all the people in Venice travel through the city by gondola then you might be a little bit disappointed as the famous gondolas are now mainly used by tourists. This gives them a different look then ages ago when the gondolas were used daily by its citizens. The Venetians themselves use motor boats nowadays. It is not only the unique location of Venice that attracts visitors, it also has a rich culture and there are many wonderful buildings to be admired.

The lost glory of Venice as a great power can be seen in the Museo Storico Navale, the Maritime Museum is also famous for its Venetian glass. There are beautiful works of art made from glass. The Basilica di San Marco, located next to the Doges' Palace, is considered one of the most beautiful churches of Europe and is a very stunning example of Byzantine art. The bridge Ponte dei Sospiri is a connection between the Doges' Palace (Palazzo Ducale) and the prison. Previously, those convicted had to walk across the bridge before they reached the cold and damp dungeons where they would be imprisoned. Through the windows of the bridge the prisoners saw the daylight for the last time. The name ‘Bridge of Sighs’ refers to the sigh they would make while crossing the bridge. Next to the basilica there is the Doges' Palace, this palace dates from the 9th century and did not only serve as home of the doge, but as a court and city hall as well.

Venice is still one of the most romantic places in the world and a favorite honeymoon destination. The piazzas and singing gondoliers, wonderful buildings and beautiful people are all there to be seen and admired.
