Barcelona, Spain

Barcelona is the most populous city in the Spanish region of Catalonia and is also its capital. It’s the second largest city in Spain, home to over 1.6 million residents. The city is situated on the Mediterranean Coast and lies between the mouths of the Llobregat and Besòs rivers. It’s an economic center for Spain and provides the second largest airport of the country, Barcelona International Airport. In 1992 the city hosted the Summer Olympics and Barcelona subsequently became an even more popular European tourist destination. It’s a city that is pleasant to visit all year long, even in the winter months January and February.

The most famous street in this city is La Rambla, a world famous boulevard that stretches from the harbor to La Place Catalunya and runs right through the old town. Barcelona’s old town is called the Ciutat Vella and includes many historical sights. For example the Barri Gòtic with its hidden squares, palaces and fountains and the lovely Cathedral of Santa Eulàlia. Not far from La Rambla is the Placa Reial, one of the most beautiful squares in the world with many terraces and restaurants surrounding it. Barcelona is also the city of Gaudi architecture, with La Sagrada Familia as the highlight of Gaudi’s career. It’s one of the most famous landmarks of Barcelona and although the church is not yet finished, it is definitely worth visiting this masterpiece.

The modernist quarter is called the ‘Eixample’ and is noted for its beautiful art nouveau buildings. The Palau de la Música Catalana is the masterpiece of Catalan’s Modernist Architecture, an UNESCO World Heritage Site and certainly a must-see. If you like visiting museums, Barcelona has many options for you to consider. A few of the most notable museums are the Museum of the City of Barcelona, the Picasso Museum, Catalonia’s Museum of History, the Football Museum, the Museum of Modern Art and the CosmoCaixa, which is one of the best science museums in Europe. The Barceloneta is the beach area of Barcelona, with sandy beaches and a great boardwalk filled with cafes and restaurants. Barcelona is simply a great European destination and offers a lot of things which will make your stay there unforgettable.
