Frankfurt am Main is Germany's main financial center and is the economic capital of post-war Germany. The Bundesbank and the German stock exchange are located here as well as the European Central Bank (ECB), making Frankfurt a financial powerhouse. Frankfurt also has a major airport, called Frankfurt Am Main International Airport, which is by far the largest airport, in relation to passenger traffic, in Germany. It is located just 12 km from the city center.
During the Second World War, Frankfurt was under heavy bombardment and most of its original buildings were destroyed. Some though have been reconstructed including the home of Goethe, Frankfurt’s famous inhabitant who became Germany’s greatest writer. Frankfurt does offer some sights for tourists; some intriguing restaurants in the Nordend, a variety of artistic and cultural events and excellent shopping opportunities. Sightseeing opportunities are mostly confined to the historical core of the city. The City Center of Frankfurt is a bustling area, offering huge shopping malls with international brands, a skyline filled by sky scrapers and historical sites, all within walking distance of each other. The downtown area of the city, especially around Römer square and the museums at the River Main, attracts millions of tourists each year and is a great place to visit when you are in Frankfurt. Great museums to pay a visit are the German Film Museum, the Museum of Regional Historic Art and Culture, the Museum of Communication and the Museum of World Cultures.
Another nice thing to do is to go for a walk in the City Forest in the south of Frankfurt. With about 48 square kilometers, it is said to be the largest inner-city forest in Germany. It is a wonderful place to relax. It's a very popular tourist attraction as well.
