Carbon offset

Almost everything we do in our daily lives releases carbon. Great amounts of carbon are now produced in such a rapid tempo that the environmental danger of global warming is becoming more evident. The truth is that our planet cannot cope with almost 7 billion people consuming as we are doing at this time. It is of great importance that we head to a more conscious way of consuming.

We can help the planet by reducing and offsetting our own carbon footprint. If everyone would choose the greenest option in their everyday choices, the impact on the environment would be enormous- in a positive way. Greenbookings offers a green option within the traveling industry, by offering carbon neutral bookings. But no matter how effective climate neutral bookings are, we have to avoid that we are only offsetting. That is exactly the reason why Greenbookings has set itself the goal of providing our customers with all the info they need about their destination and accomodations so that they can make a well informed -green- choice. We cannot ignore the modern standard of living, which includes our consumption driven economy, therefore we have to create more appealing sustainable options which should eventually result in a totally sustainable traveling industry.

To show you what is done with your contribution, here's an example of investment we have made in a sustainable energy project in China. This was done as a direct result of our business in the Netherlands. Greenbookings is investing in project XHP (Xiaogushan Hydropower Project) in China. By investing in this project the emissions of greenhouse gases which were caused by bookings made in 2008 are being compensated. This project, which is taking place on the Heihe river in the province of Gansu, is creating green energy which is being generated by waterpower. The water of the river and the nearby waterfall generate power in a durable manner, an alternative to using fossil fuels. This project also contributes to the local community by decreasing poverty in this impoverished part of China.
The power of streaming and falling water keeps the water turbine turning. A water turbine is a screw-shaped wheel which is put into motion by streaming water. By connecting the axis of the turbine to a generator, electricity is generated. The use of waterpower doesn't cause any pollution or waste. This is why waterpower generation is seen as one of the main forms of generating green energy. This waterpower generation plant has been accepted by UNFCCC (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change) as a CDM (Clean Development Mechanism) project.

We strongly believe that it is possible to effectively fight global warming, by compensating our carbon emmissions, without losing out on quality of life. We offset your carbon footprint in various ways. To learn more about Greenbookings programs, go to our carbon offset programs page.

How do we calculate your carbon emission?

Greenbookings has developed an unique program for offsetting carbon emissions that we call the Carbon Compensation Program. With this program a calculation is made of exactly how much carbon emmissions are emitted by the different components of your booking. Naturally, this is done without any extra charge towards our customers. Our calculation model is approved by the Dutch applied science organization TNO and checked by accountant firm PricewaterhouseCoopers.
