Brussels is the capital city of Belgium, home to approximately 145.000 people. The Brussels Capitol-Region, the wider area of the city of Brussels, has a population of 2 million and is even the "de facto" capital of the European Union. It’s a bilingual city, where both French and Dutch are the official languages.
Brussels has a small historical center, but it has some great landmarks to discover. The Grand Place is at the heart of the city, surrounded by the city tower and a wide range of old buildings. Another showpiece of the city is Manneken-Pis, a small bronze statue of a peeing boy that represents the irreverent spirit of Brussels. The Atomium is a highlight as well, a big representation of an atomic unit cell magnified 165 billion times, built for the Brussels World Fair Expo in 1958. Brussels also has a few notable museums and art exhibitions, such as the Royal History and Arts Museum, Royal Museum of Fine Art, the Cinema Museum and the National Science Museum of Belgium.
For a good view of the city you should go to the Jubelpark in the eastern part of the city, where you will find the beautiful ‘Arc de Triomphe’. At the top of 'Arc de Triomphe' you will find a terrace, where you can enjoy a great view of Brussels. For some delicious dining it’s best to go to the area of the Beenhouwersstraat/ Rue des Bouchers, as it has excellent restaurants. When in Brussels you definitely need to try the typical Belgian sugared waffle, a delicious Belgian specialty that is on offer almost everywhere. In Belgium they definitely know what shopping is, as Brussels has the world’s first shopping mall, opened in 1847, called Shopping at Galleries. Other great shopping areas are the Rue Neuve, with its department store Galeria Inno, and the area around the Grand Place is well known for its boutique style shops. As you can see, Brussels has a lot to offer and is a great destination for a city trip. Greenbookings invites you to visit Brussels.
